CoolSculpting vs Liposuction

CoolSculpting and Liposuction are for people who want to improve the contours of their bodies by getting rid of excess fat stand out. With either procedure, you can remove stored fat and eliminate fat cells in such areas as your upper or lower abdomen, inner thighs and upper arms. You also can decrease or eliminate the fat rolls known as "love handles."

What Is CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is FDA-Cleared procedure uses a medical device to perform cryogenic lipolysis, or "cryolipolysis." It requires no anesthesia, no surgery and there is downtime. The body sculpting device applies controlled cooling to localized fatty tissues that lie just under the skin. The low temperatures crystallize the fat cells without harm to the skin itself. The crystallized cells slowly die, and the body's natural processes eliminate them. It takes up to two months to see full results. Because destroyed fat cells do not grow back, changes are permanent.

What Is Liposuction

This is an invasive procedure that usually requires general anesthesia. Large tubes vacuum targeted fat cells out of the body. Fat removal areas can be a bit larger with liposuction, but there may be a long recovery time. Up to eleven pounds of fat can be removed during one procedure.

Which Procedure is Best for Me?

For body areas that are FDA cleared, both CoolSculpting and liposuction achieve the same results in very different ways. The main difference between the two is the risk and downtime of the procedures.

The risks associated with liposuction are the same risks associated with any invasive surgery, among them are the risk of infection and even the possibility of death. CoolSculpting poses none of these risks.

Along with these risks is the difference in the level of discomfort and downtime. Discomfort related to Coolsculpting is very limited and there is no downtime. Liposuction can result in substantial discomfort and pain and result in days of downtime.
